As the end of year holidays roll around again, there is a certain excitement that fills the air of Cape Cod about one holiday in particular. We live in the seat of our nation’s beginning, located just minutes away from the most famous rock in the world, Plymouth Rock, which should be your first clue as to which holiday we love most! Yes, Thanksgiving on Cape Cod is a holiday that we hold near and dear to our hearts and if you have chosen to skip the traditional meal at home, you know, the one where grumpy uncles complain about the food and snooty sisters-in-law feel the need to go on and on and on about all the ways their children are better than other children, and are looking for someplace special to escape to, our Pretty Picky Properties located in the heart of Cape Cod offer the perfect place to start new holiday traditions! This guide to Thanksgiving 2023 on Cape Cod will let you celebrate just miles away from where the very first Thanksgiving took place all those centuries ago!

Run for your Meal

This time of year often brings with it an excess of pounds as we eat more and move less (it’s so cold out there!) but you can make a preemptive strike against too tight clothing with participation in the Chatham Turkey Trot, taking place at 8am on Thanksgiving Day. This family-friendly event allows you to choose between walking and running and will get its start at the corner of Stage Harbor Road and Main Street in Chatham. Costing $20 if you register here before November 3rd and will cost $30 if you procrastinate! Providing early registrants with a free Turkey Trot tee shirt, (what a great souvenir!) this 3.1-mile run takes runners along some of the most scenic roads in Chatham.

The Main Attraction

Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to feeling thankful, but it is the meal that is the cornerstone to its popularity and even as our Pretty Picky Properties offer fully equipped kitchens that make meal prep fun, chances are you would rather skip the work and have someone prep, serve, and clear away your traditional feast!

Today, it can be relatively easy to find a restaurant that is open on the holiday, including the Hearth n’ Kettle in South Yarmouth. Offering your choice of a turkey dinner with all the fixings (including the pumpkin pie, apple pie, or Indian Pudding for dessert!) or a Prime Rib dinner, you can also choose to take it to-go. In Chatham, the Chatham Bars Inn has traditionally held a Grand Buffet, taking the traditional feast to the next level of luxury with choices of seafood (including caviar) soups, cold platters and more.

Or, if you want to experience the comforts of home and not have to venture out into the cold for long, many local restaurants are offering fully prepared dinners to go that you order ahead of time and heat and eat! Pate’s Chatham offers a complete Turkey Dinner to take home and devour, including everything from dinner rolls to cranberry sauce and will need to be ordered a couple of days in advance. Marshland Restaurants in Sandwich is also providing the meal and sweet pies for dessert and the Pelham House Resort in Dennis Port has their own turkey to-go special that is guaranteed to be delicious! Also, many of the local grocery stores and markets may be offering a heat and eat dinner for you to take home to your holiday hideaway, so be sure and check out the store closes to your vacation home!
