For some intrepid explorers, finding the hidden gems of Cape Cod provides a vacation experience that is both fulfilling and exciting. If you are a Pretty Picky Properties guest who prefers to march to the beat of your own drum, this guide to unique activities and attractions for 2026 will make it easy to go your own road!
Discovering Cape Cod’s Hidden Gems Beyond the Popular Spots
For most of the world, a visit to Cape Cod means beach days, lobster rolls, and a chance to experience history. And just because you prefer to find more unique things to do on Cape Cod, it doesn’t mean you have to skip the familiar. It simply means you need to incorporate your desire to visit hidden gems beyond the popular spots into your dream of doing the things you’ve always wanted.

Quiet Beaches and Lesser-Known Coastal Spots
The Cape Cod National Seashore has been a dream vacation destination since before it was established as a national seashore in 1961. And although our beaches are popular, there are still a few beaches and lesser-known coastal spots that remain Cape Cod hidden gems. The beaches we have listed here are not part of the CCNS, but they are worth adding to your itinerary.
Crowes Pasture Beach in Dennis
It will take about a mile hike to reach Crowes Pasture Beach. Its secluded beach and beautiful tidal flats, however, will make you feel as if you have found paradise, something the locals all feel as well.

First Encounter Beach in Eastham
Offering a chance to walk in the footsteps of the pilgrims, First Encounter Beach is where the English and the Nauset Tribe met for the first time. Acclaimed for being one of the five most peaceful places on Cape Cod, this hidden gem of Cape Cod offers warm waters and a quiet beach that is rarely crowded.

Scenic Viewpoints and Unexpected Natural Beauty
To be perfectly clear, everywhere you turn on Cape Cod, you will come across scenic viewpoints and unexpected natural beauty. But there are a few spots that shine brighter than all others, and we have added some of our favorite Cape Cod hidden gems below.
Rock Harbor in Orleans
Rumored to offer the most dramatic sunsets in all of Massachusetts, Rock Harbor may be one of our favorite places, especially at low tide. The tidal flats reveal a graveyard of old boats, and the pictures taken here will be breathtaking.

Scargo Tower in Dennis
Offering bird’s eye views of the Dennis land and seascape, Scargo Tower was originally built as a memorial to a local family. Today, the cobblestone structure stands tall on a high hill, offering memorable sunset views of Scargo Lake and the surrounding landscape.

Unique Attractions and Local Experiences
Some of the unique things to do on Cape Cod will also be popular with ordinary travelers, but these experiences and attractions are still unique to the area. As we said earlier, you will want to incorporate the standard tourist activities into your desire to discover hidden gems, and we think the attractions and experiences listed below will help you succeed.
The Lighthouses of Cape Cod
There are 14 lighthouses on Cape Cod. The most well-known, Nauset Light in Eastham, is the lighthouse pictured on Cape Cod Potato Chips and should be added to your itinerary as a unique attraction.

The Windmills of Cape Cod
Unless you’re from the Netherlands, the chances that you have encountered a historic windmill in your travels are low. On Cape Cod, however, there are seven historic windmills, including the Chatham Windmill, built in 1797.
Four Seas Ice Cream
Not so much a unique attraction as much as it is a beloved local experience, a visit to Four Seas Ice Cream is a must. This is the oldest ice cream shop in our entire state, having opened its doors in 1934.

Small Museums, Historic Sites, and Quirky Stops
Some of Cape Cod’s hidden gems can be found in the small museums, historic sites, and quirky stops that dot the island. The ones listed below bring us joy, and we highly recommend exploring them for yourself.
Edward Gorey House
If the name Edward Gorey sounds familiar, it’s not surprising. The gentleman was an author, illustrator, puppeteer, and playwright, and he lived right here on Cape Cod until his death in 2000. His home has been turned into a small museum celebrating his work, offering a fascinating experience for all.

The Bourne Tunnel
There are myths that surround this unique, but slightly eerie, 200-foot-long tunnel, but the truth is quite simple. It was built in 1988 as a safe passage for wildlife under Route 25. We truly are animal lovers here on Cape Cod.

Fort Hill Rural Historic District in Eastham
There are many historic sites on and around Cape Cod, but perhaps the most fascinating one is the Fort Hill Rural Historic District in Eastham. Offering hiking trails, the Nauset Marsh, and the Captain Penniman House (a historic sea captain’s home), plan on spending much of the day at this historic site.

Tips for Avoiding Crowds and Finding Your Own Hidden Gems
No matter how you spend your time on Cape Cod, there will probably be crowds. There are ways to avoid most of the crowds, however, starting with what we call the “Rule of 8.” This tip won’t completely eliminate crowds, but it will make parking at local beaches easier by telling you to head to the beach before 8 AM. Below, we have added other tips and information on finding your own hidden gems on Cape Cod.
Explore the Outer and Upper Cape Towns
The towns of the Outer (Eastham, Wellfleet) and Upper Cape (Sandwich, Mashpee) are known to be a little quieter than the other areas. Offering winding roads that lead to secluded spots, and conservation trails where nature is celebrated, not people and loud noises.

Try to Avoid 6A
We know you may not be able to entirely avoid historic State Road 6A, but if you can lessen your use of the road, you’ll save yourself from bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Visit During the Off-Season
After summer’s end, the masses depart, leaving quiet beaches, shorter wait times at restaurants, and more opportunities to snag your favorite Pretty Picky Properties vacation retreat.
Choose Pretty Picky Properties
