This seemingly insignificant act was the first step in creating an American government, even if it wasn’t America yet, while also making peace with the Wampanoag tribe, the native people who lived here first. Where the Pilgrim Monument Is Located and How to Reach it
Built to be noticed, the Pilgrim Monument stands atop High Pole Hill in Provincetown. This granite monument commemorating that first landing is taller than any other all-granite structure in our country, giving yet another reason you will want to visit this spot first. It is accessible by car, and parking is available, but for those who may not have a vehicle during their exploration of Cape Cod museums, an inclined elevator, accessible off Bradford Street, offers a unique way to get to the top.

Walking Routes, Nearby Attractions, and Parking Considerations
Although it is possible to walk to the top of High Pole Hill, the drive is much easier, and the inclined elevator is so much more fun. This is a very popular attraction; parking can be difficult to find in the area, so if you park near or on Bradford Street and take the inclined elevator, you can avoid issues, especially if you visit early in the day.
As you may have suspected, the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum are two attractions that should be explored together. The MacMillan Pier and Herring Cove Beach are also nearby attractions.

As we mentioned earlier, inside the museum, you will find exhibits detailing the history of the pilgrims who made those historic first steps, learn about that first Thanksgiving, and dive into the problems they faced. You will discover everything you ever wanted to learn about our whaling and fishing history, and you’ll also learn about how Provincetown was enjoyed as an art colony and theater hot spot.
Climbing the Monument and Enjoying the Views
The views from the top are unforgettable. To get there, you’ll have to climb 116 steps and 60 ramps to the top of the 252-foot-tall Pilgrim Monument.
Your reward for reaching the top, aside from a healthier heart, will be views of our town, Cape Cod Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. On clear days, you will be able to see the entirety of the outer Cape Cod area, including the towns of Wellfleet, Eastham, and Truro, so don’t forget your camera!

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum are seasonal attractions, open from April to November.
