Even as summer is the season where everything comes to life on Cape Cod, the promise of spring still serves as a magnetic draw for many travelers coming in from all over the world. Spring on Cape Cob is when the flowers are beginning to bloom, the trees are beginning to bud, and our Pretty Picky Properties seasonal sanctuaries still provide the warmth and welcome you expect from a vacation rental. This guide to a Cape Cod spring vacation journey will paint a beautiful picture of an idyllic getaway you will wish never had to end.
Take a Cape Cod Spring Vacation Journey
Day 1: Brewster Blooms Beautifully
As the Cape begins to awaken from a long winter’s sleep, the thing we most look forward to (aside from being warm) is the beauty of the flowers that are awakening as well, and Brewster in Bloom is a spring festival that celebrates the season with live music, a 5B (bloom) run, an arts and crafts show, and of course, lots and lots of beautiful flowers. The festival ends with a parade that starts in the Eddy Elementary School parking lot, charming bystanders with flowering floats, costumed animals, and classic convertibles chauffeuring local bigwigs through town.
Day 2: Romantic Meal in Brewster
The restaurant situation can be a bit tricky on Cape Cod as many local hot spots are only open for the summer season, but Spinnaker Restaurant, located at 2019 Main Street in Brewster, should be open, and even better than that, it has been voted the most romantic restaurant in the area. Offering a sophisticated menu of surf and turf favorites, wonderful views, and an elite wait staff that will cater to your every need without hovering too much, this restaurant is the perfect spot to celebrate an anniversary.
Day 3: Counting Sheep in Yarmouth
Taylor-Bray Farm, 108 Bray Farm N, has been an integral part of the Yarmouth landscape since the 17th century, and its Spring Sheep Festival is actually held in the waning days of the season, just a week or so before the summer solstice begins. Offering the opportunity to watch sheep being sheared, their wool being dyed, and how the most well-trained dogs on Cape Cod herd the sheep, this farm festival is one of our favorites. There will be hayrides, baby lambs, and a silent auction with the proceeds going towards the care of the animals and maintenance of the farm, your spring journey won’t be complete if you don’t explore the fun that can be had at this wonderful festival.
Day 4: Two Wheels Will Move Your Soul in Orleans
What was once a railroad that was used to transport passengers is now a beautiful hiking and biking trail known as the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Running through multiple towns and villages on Cape Cod, visitors can choose to ride the entire 25.5 miles or pick and choose the segments they want to explore. Our Orleans guests may want to start at the spot that is nearest to their vacation escapes, renting their bikes from Bike Trail Rentals, located at 8 Canal Road in Orleans. Paved for easy riding, bikers can pack a picnic in their backpacks and stop anywhere along the way that catches their interest, enjoying the beauty of a spring day on the Cape.
Day 5: Herring Runs in Harwich
Spring does seem to be the time when we celebrate the natural side of Cape Cod and the Harwich Herring Run is the perfect example. Beginning every spring, generally some time in April, the streams and rivers in Harwich and surrounding towns are filled with the silvery fish all heading to freshwater lakes to spawn. If the people hanging out at water’s edge aren’t enough of a hint that the runs have begun, perhaps the sight of birds of prey (hawks, osprey, etc.) lurking on the shores will be a better clue. Herring River is (fittingly) where the herring run in Harwich.
Day 6: Hopping on the Easter Brunch Train in Hyannis
Enjoying an authentic Cape Cod experience often occurs by taking part in local events and festivals, and the Cape Cod Easter Brunch Train is one delicious example. Taking place on Easter morning, the train provides vintage railroad cars and dome cars, departing from the Hyannis depot and chugging along to the Cape Cod Canal and back again. Prices include the three-course brunch and begin at $49.99. A full bar is on the train with the drinks being billed separately and the Easter Bunny will be at the depot, happily awaiting photo opportunities with your kiddos.
Day 7: The Breaching of the Whales in Harwich
Spring is also the prime season for whale watching on Cape Cod, with the season beginning in the middle of April and ending in October. June through September is the best time, but the great people at Down Cape Charters & Boat Rentals know all the best places to go to witness the journey of the whales at any time during the season. Located at 2173 MA-28, they offer a variety of boats that will make this experience a special one, and when you return home to your Pretty Picky Properties spring sanctuary, you will have plenty of photos to help you remember the experience.
