By the time the end of the year rolls around, we find ourselves tired and disillusioned, sad that another year has passed and not much has changed in our lives, but we at Pretty Picky Properties invite you to shake things up this year with a visit to Cape Cod for the new year. The thought is that whatever we do on New Year’s Eve is something we will be doing for the next 12 months, so why not travel to an exotic place, relax in luxurious and comfortable surroundings, and explore all that Cape Cod has to offer over the holidays? This guide to New Year’s in Cape Cod will give you a peek into a holiday that will be one you never forget.
First Night Chatham, New Year’s Eve
Excess is common on New Year’s Eve, but the First Night Chatham celebration is an alcohol-free event that offers a plethora of family friendly activities for everyone to enjoy. This day will be filled with ice sculptures, giant Legos, a noise parade, and food trucks that will offer a tasty way to say hello to the new year. Also offering live entertainment and fireworks earlier in the night, traveling families will definitely want to participate in this holiday celebration.
Meet the Giants of Sandwich
Local artist Michael Magyar creates giant-sized light sculptures that can be found throughout the town of Sandwich starting in November and ending after the new year, and if you haven’t seen them as of yet, New Year’s Eve offers the perfect time to drive through town, seeking out the Giants that are resting along 6A, perhaps with a thermos of hot cocoa to sweeten up the night’s adventures.
Dinner at the West End, 20 Scudder Avenue in Hyannis
Dining out in Cape Cod on New Year’s Eve can become a new tradition, and if you believe the superstition we mentioned earlier (whatever you are doing on New Year’s will be what you do the entire year), enjoying a fantastic dinner at the West End will assure a year filled with culinary treats. Offering a special four-course tasting menu followed by a cocktail party that begins around 9:30 PM and ends in the new year. If a big party doesn’t quite sound appealing, Portside Tavern, 73 North Street, will be open until midnight for food, drinks, and a tasteful and fun celebration.
Pelham House Resort, 14 Sea Street in Dennis Port
Pelham House Resort offers its own celebration every year, featuring a cocktail party followed by a four-course meal, and ending the night with a dessert bar and another cocktail party in their rooftop restaurant. The views from the restaurant will probably include a variety of informal fireworks shows, as residents have a little fun at the beaches of Dennis Port on this last night of the year.
Polar Plunges on New Year’s Day
January 1st is Polar Plunge Day, and although we personally don’t understand the appeal of starting out your new year freezing your you-know-what off, there are plenty of people that do, and many towns and villages on Cape Cod will be offering their own Polar Plunges. FOYCOA’s Annual Polar Plunge takes place at 11:30 AM in Smuggler’s Beach in Yarmouth, Freeze the Day Plunge will take place at Attaquin Beach in Mashpee at 11 AM, and the Monument Beach Polar Plunge begins at noon in Bourne.
First-Day Hikes on New Year’s Day
If plunging your body into frigid waters doesn’t sound like fun, but you do want to start your new year off on the right foot by following your resolutions, First Day Hikes are the perfect way to do so. Various towns throughout Cape Cod will be sponsoring these invigorating hikes, including a Sunrise Mindful Beach Stroll beginning in Red River Beach in Harwich, First Sunrise Walk at West Dennis Beach, Sunrise at Sandy Neck, and the Frost Fish Creek Trail Walk that will allow late sleepers to participate since it does not start until 10AM. (Something we are sure revelers on NYE will greatly appreciate!) Another even later starter, First Day Hike at Calf Field Pond in Brewster doesn’t begin until 1 PM, which is definitely more our speed.
